BroadArts Theatre Announces Community Support for innovative and original theatre-music-arts productions

BroadArts Theatre is thrilled and grateful to announce the receipt of five community supported grants, which will make our upcoming original comedy music theatre projects and productions possible.

'On the Road to Peace" Summer Theatre Arts day camps

Coming during the first two weeks of August, 2008, is BroadArts second annual 'On the Road to Peace" Summer Theatre Arts day camps for children 7 to 14. The Peace Arts camps are lead by professional artist/teachers, including Program Coordinator and Head Instructor Carolyne Haycraft, who teaches acting, Sarah Adams, the Head Instructor of Music, and guest artists Molly Jaeger (writing), Sharon Martini (design and illustration), Susan Kraemer (dance and creative movement) and Barnaby King (clowning and improvisation).

The BroadArts Theatre camps will introduce our 'future peacemakers of America' students to the work of contemporary Nobel Peace Prize winners Wangari Maathai, Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams, Rigoberta Menchu Tum and other global peacemakers, as inspiration for their own theatrical creations. There are two camp sessions, Aug 4-8, and Aug 11-15, from 9 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. On each Friday afternoon, a public Celebration Performance will be held at 2 p.m., where the students present their scenes, songs, stories, poems and dances to a free audience.

BroadArts is grateful to announce the support of The MRG Foundation Peace Grants program and the Foundation of Mercy Community Peace Initiative for their partial support of the 'On the Road to Peace" children's theatre program. Thanks to grant support, BroadArts is able to offer each one week session one of the most affordable rates in Portland: $50-$150 fee per child, for the entire week's program. You can register for the camp sessions at < a href="index.html">www.broadarts.org or call BroadArts Theatre at 503-288-5181 for more information.

Art into Action Salons

BroadArts is thrilled to announce the receipt of a Portland Planning Bureau "Vision Into Action" grant for our upcoming series of Art In Action Salons, celebrating local women and organizations who are working to make Portland the ‘perfect Rose City' for all of our residents. In 2006, BroadArts Theatre was awarded a visionPDX Grant by the City of Portland for IF I WERE THE QUEEN OF THIS FOREST, our imaginative and funny re-telling of the familiar story of Oz, to assist with the creation of a 20 year vision for the city, initiated by Mayor Tom Potter.

Supported by the City grant, and a grant from the Multnomah County Cultural Coalition, BroadArts Theater will produce a five-part salon series featuring extraordinary artists, community leaders, and groups fostering positive change in Portland. Designed to encourage public participation in actualizing the community vision, these free multi-cultural, interfaith and intergenerational events will encourage involvement in local organizations that focus on a wide variety of issues, from the environment and land-use to issues impacting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, civil rights, women's right, environmental justice, worker justice and conflict resolution work. See the Vision into Action grants page for more!

Performances by the BroadBand, BroadArt's Theatre's touring musical concert group, will enhance each Salon with satiric, comic and serious original music about the work our guest speakers are doing. Performers and panelist will participate in a conversation on the issues at each salon, community groups will have informational tables, and audience and participants alike will be encouraged to become a part of Portland's best possible future. At selected Salons, the audience will be invited to and assisted in creating a song, right on the spot!

WONDERBROADER

Finally, BroadArts is also delighted to announce support from the MRG Foundation's general granting program for pre-production support for our newest upcoming original comedy musical, WONDERBROADER, scheduled for the fall of 2008. Created and composed by Artistic Director Melinda E. Pittman and the cast and musicians, WONDER-BROADER celebrates global women working to change our world for the better, by working for peace, equality, justice, sustainability and compassion.

WONDERBROADER is the follow-up to WONDERBROADS, Pittman's sparkling original musical comedy celebrating forty 20th Century North American women, the Babes and Broads Who Broke the Rules. The funny, edgy, dangerous, historic, inspiring, sexy, musical dramady has toured on and off since it opened in 1999. The musical won the 2000 Angus L. Bowmer Prize of the Oregon Book Awards for Best Drama.

BroadArts attracts intergenerational, thoughtful people; Folks from the squeezed middle, women, men, working class and low-income people, children, people of color, and folks who ponder big questions and are involved in their communities. Audiences of many colors ranged from toddlers through high school, millennials, baby boomers, elders and crones. During post show discussions, BroadArts deliberately builds connections between community organizations and audience members. The Artists, Board and volunteers of BroadArts Theatre build community partnerships with unions, social justice organizations, service organizations, progressives, middle-of-the-roaders and communities/ people of color.

Changing the world, one joke at a time!
